Calculation formula

Estimated grout per m² = ((tile length + tile width) ÷ (tile length × tile width)) × joint width × tile thickness × density. Total grout = grout per m² × tiled area.

Example: For 30 × 30 cm tiles, 8 mm thickness, a 5 mm joint and density of 1,600 kg/m³, the formula gives about 0.43 kg/m².

Frequently asked questions

Why is grout usage only approximate?

Real layouts include joint crossings, uneven edges, application losses and product density differences. Add an allowance and check the product data sheet before buying.

How does joint width affect the result?

A wider joint and a thicker tile create more space to fill, so the estimated grout requirement increases.
