Calculation formula
Surface area = length × width; tiles without allowance = ⌈surface area ÷ one tile area⌉; tiles with allowance = ⌈surface area × (1 + allowance / 100) ÷ one tile area⌉.
Example: For a 3 × 2.5 m surface and 60 × 60 cm tiles with a 10% allowance, plan for 21 tiles without allowance and 23 tiles with allowance.
Frequently asked questions
How much tile allowance should I buy?
A straight layout often uses around 5–10%. Diagonal layouts, complex shapes and pattern matching may require more; check the layout rather than treating one percentage as universal.
Does the calculation include grout joints?
No. For a detailed layout, account separately for the tile format, joint width and starting point. The number of whole tiles is usually affected only slightly by the joint.
