Why Grout Turns Dark

Start by identifying what changed the grout colour: temporary wetting, surface dirt, efflorescence, uneven drying or biological growth. If the darkening returns after cleaning, inspect ventilation, seals, leaks and the substrate. Cleaning alone will not fix a joint that stays wet.

What the appearance can suggest

• Even darkening after a shower may be ordinary moisture if the grout later dries back to its original shade.
• Black or green dots, fuzzy growth and a musty smell are more consistent with biological contamination.
• White marks can be efflorescence from moisture moving through the substrate or masonry.
• Different shades soon after grouting may come from uneven mixing, washing or drying conditions.

Check the moisture path first

Inspect corners, sealant joints, pipe penetrations, areas behind furniture and the floor around sanitary fixtures. Look for standing water, a leaking connection or a ventilation grille that is blocked. A surface stain is different from moisture arriving through the wall or joint.

When surface cleaning is enough

For a surface deposit on a sound, dry joint, use a cleaner compatible with the tile and grout and test it on an inconspicuous area first. Follow the product instructions, do not mix cleaning chemicals and allow the joint to dry fully.

When the joint or substrate needs attention

Returning stains, a soft or crumbling joint, odour, a wet wall or a swollen neighbouring tile point to a deeper problem. Repair the leak or condensation source before replacing grout or sealant, otherwise the new material will discolour again.
