Why Tile Grout Cracks

Grout cracks when the joint shrinks unevenly, the substrate or tile moves, or the product is used outside its intended joint range. Too much mixing water, a shallow or dirty joint and early wetting can weaken the result. If the crack follows several tiles, inspect the installation instead of refilling one short section.

Typical causes

• More water was added than the product instructions allow, or the mix was used after it had started to set.
• Dust, adhesive or moisture remained in the joint, or the joint was not filled through its depth.
• The joint width or depth is outside the range of the chosen grout.
• The substrate, screed or tiled surface is still moving.
• A movement joint was filled with rigid grout instead of a suitable flexible detail.
• The surface was washed or exposed to water before the stated curing stage.

How to read the defect

A few fine cracks in isolated joints can follow shrinkage or mixing errors. Missing pieces, hollow joints, damp marks and a repeating line through the room need a closer inspection. If the tile itself moves, the problem is not limited to the grout.

When a local repair can work

A local repair is reasonable when the tiles are firm, the substrate is dry and the defect is limited to selected joints. Remove loose grout to a sound depth without damaging tile edges, clean the joint and use a compatible product. The source of moisture or movement must be addressed first.

What usually fails

Adding a thin layer over crumbly grout, guessing the water ratio or filling a movement joint with a rigid material may look tidy for a short time. The crack will return when the same movement or wetting occurs again.
