Can You Lay Laminate on Fresh Floor Screed?
Do not lay laminate just because fresh screed can be walked on. Moisture, strength, flatness and the flooring manufacturer’s requirements must be checked together.
Laminate should go on a screed only after the base meets the flooring system’s requirements for moisture, stability and flatness. Being able to walk on the surface proves very little: a young screed can still release moisture and move under a floating floor.
Why walkability is not readiness
A set screed can carry limited traffic while moisture remains deeper in the layer and the floor is still stabilising. Laminate and underlayment cover the surface, which can hide the problem and contribute to swelling, noise or separated locking joints.
Checks before installation
- The screed has reached the condition specified by its product documentation.
- The surface is firm, without loose zones, active cracks or hollow areas.
- Flatness meets the requirements of the laminate and underlayment.
- Moisture has been checked by a method required for the chosen materials.
- Leaks, dampness and other causes of changing floor conditions have been corrected.
Screed type and heating system matter
Different screed systems dry and behave differently. Radiant floor heating adds requirements for the screed, flooring, underlayment and commissioning sequence. Use the documents for all parts of the assembly rather than treating a visibly dry surface as proof.
Underlayment is not a moisture cure
Underlayment can provide separation or acoustic properties where the system allows it, but it does not remove excess moisture or correct an unstable and uneven screed.
Plan the materials after the base is ready
Use the screed calculator for the mix and the laminate calculator for packs and allowance once the floor plan is confirmed. Calculators help with quantities; they do not certify the screed for installation.
Frequently asked questions
Can laminate be installed a few days after pouring?
A calendar period is not enough. Check the screed type, actual moisture condition and flooring requirements.
Can plastic film prove the screed is dry?
Use the verification method required by the screed or flooring system rather than treating a simple visual test as a certificate.
Will underlayment let a damp screed dry safely?
No. It may restrict evaporation and cannot replace drying or moisture correction.
What if laminate was installed too early?
Stop and assess swelling, joints, movement and the screed condition. Avoid covering the symptoms before finding the cause.
