How Long Does Plaster Take to Dry?

Plaster is ready for filler or another finish only after the layer has dried and stabilised under the conditions required by its manufacturer. Gypsum, cement-based and specialist mixes, thin and thick areas, dense concrete and porous substrates all dry differently. There is no reliable universal number of days.

What controls readiness

• The plaster type and the purpose for which the mix is specified.
• Average and local thickness, especially at corners, openings and deep repairs.
• Substrate absorption and any layers below the plaster.
• Temperature, humidity and safe air exchange in the room.
• Leaks, dampness or a cold part of the wall that keeps moisture in the system.

Signs that the layer is not ready

Uneven colour, a cold or soft feel and visibly damp areas can indicate that drying is still in progress. Thick zones may remain wet while the rest of the wall looks finished. Do not cover them with filler or paint until the delay and the substrate have been checked.

The next finish changes the requirement

Filler, paint, wallpaper and tile each have their own requirements for strength, flatness, moisture and primer. Fresh-plaster guidance can help choose the sequence, but it does not replace the data sheets for the plaster and the finish.

Do not force-dry a wet layer

• Keep the room within the conditions permitted for the mix.
• Do not seal a wet layer under a vapour-tight finish.
• Avoid intense local heat or abrupt changes that dry one area much faster than another.
• Investigate a leak or substrate problem if drying has stopped.

Material quantity and drying are separate questions
