Can You Paint or Wallpaper Fresh Plaster?

Move to the next finish only when the plaster is ready for it. There is no universal calendar deadline: drying depends on the mix, layer thickness, substrate, room conditions and actual moisture. Follow the plaster and finish instructions and confirm that the surface is stable, dry enough and compatible.

Why covering plaster too early causes problems

A surface can feel dry while moisture remains deeper in the layer. Early filler, paint or wallpaper can change adhesion and drying, leading to stains, cracks, bubbles or peeling. A dense finish can also slow the remaining moisture from leaving the wall.

Signs that the layer is not ready

• The colour is uneven and still changes as the plaster dries.
• The surface feels damp or cold, smears, powders or shows efflorescence.
• Soft areas, cracks, debonding or chalking remain.
• Thicker zones, corners and areas beside openings are drying more slowly.

Preparation depends on the finish

Filler needs a sound and compatible base. Paint usually needs a more uniform plane and controlled absorption. Wallpaper needs a clean, dry surface without loose patches. Tile adhesive has its own substrate requirements; fresh plaster is not automatically ready for tile.

What to confirm in the product documents

• The allowed layer thickness and drying conditions for the plaster.
• Whether primer is required before the next material.
• Compatibility between the plaster, filler, paint, wallpaper adhesive or tile adhesive.
• Any method the manufacturer gives for checking readiness.

If the schedule is tight

Reduce moisture load, provide the ventilation intended for the system and avoid overheating the surface. Forced drying or applying a test coat over an uncertain area can make the result worse. When the condition is unclear, use a small test area and obtain advice for the exact materials.
