How Thick Should Floor Screed Be?
Required screed thickness is a system decision, not a single number. Average thickness helps estimate material, while local high and low points determine the construction method.
The right screed thickness depends on the base, the construction, the selected mix and the finished floor. Do not copy one minimum or maximum from a general tip: the permitted range must match the product and the system in the room.
What changes the decision
- Floor deviation and the required finished level.
- Bonded, unbonded or floating construction when the chosen system distinguishes them.
- The condition of the substrate and any separation or insulation layer.
- Pipes or cables in a heated floor and the required cover around them.
- Mix type, floor covering, load, thresholds and door heights.
Why too little and too much can be a problem
A layer that is too thin may not cover the base or protect the system. An overly thick layer adds weight, extends drying and can increase shrinkage stress. Sharp changes in thickness deserve attention even when the average seems reasonable.
Measure the working layer
Use a straightedge or laser to map the floor, establish the finished level and separate average thickness from local minimum and maximum points. The average is useful for material planning; the extremes determine whether the chosen method is allowed.
Heated floors and transitions
A heated floor has additional requirements for coverage, evenness and commissioning. Do not set the layer only to raise a threshold or reduce material without checking the heating and screed documentation.
