Why Laminate Flooring Creaks
Creaking usually means that planks or locking joints are moving under load. Locate the sound and inspect the subfloor, underlayment and perimeter before trying a quick fix.
Laminate flooring creaks when planks or click-lock joints move slightly under load. An uneven or flexible subfloor, debris, unsuitable underlayment and edges trapped against a wall or threshold are common causes. First locate the sound and its movement pattern instead of filling the whole floor with an untested product.
How to locate the sound
- Walk slowly across the room and mark the points where the sound repeats.
- Have another person step on the area while you watch the joints and skirting or baseboard.
- Compare the centre of the room, walls and doorways; the position often reveals the type of movement.
- Note whether the sound changes after humidity changes, heating or furniture is moved.
Subfloor-related causes
A dip lets a plank flex, while a high spot creates point loading at a joint. Grit, plaster crumbs and old coating fragments can create a small rocking point. If the sound covers a large area, suspect preparation or subfloor movement rather than one defective plank.
Underlayment and perimeter movement
An underlayment that is too soft, too thick or overlapped incorrectly can increase movement. It does not level a pronounced defect. A floor pressed against a wall, pipe or threshold also works against the locking system and may creak before the joints separate.
What a sensible repair looks like
- If the edge is trapped, correct the obstruction only when the flooring instructions allow it.
- For an isolated defect, open the accessible section, remove debris and inspect the subfloor.
- For a system-wide problem, dismantle the affected area, correct the subfloor and install compatible underlayment.
- Do not drill or inject material without understanding the floor build-up; it can damage locks and affect warranty support.
When the noise is below the laminate
The sound may come from boards, joists, fixings or the structural floor. Deflection, cracks, dampness or substantial movement require a diagnosis of the construction, not a cosmetic laminate repair.
