Gypsum Plaster or Cement Plaster: Which Fits the Job?

Gypsum and cement plaster are chosen for different conditions. The right option depends on moisture exposure, substrate, layer requirements and the next finish—not a universal ranking.

Choose gypsum or cement-based plaster by the room conditions, substrate and finishing system. Gypsum plaster can be convenient for a smooth interior base in suitable dry conditions, while cement-based systems are considered where mineral compatibility and moisture tolerance matter. The product data sheet decides whether a particular mix is suitable.

What to compare before buying

  • Room conditions: dry interior, kitchen, bathroom or an area exposed to repeated moisture.
  • Wall material, old coatings and how the substrate was prepared.
  • Average and local coat thickness allowed for the chosen mix.
  • The next finish, such as paint, wallpaper, tile or another mineral layer.
  • Whether primer, reinforcement or several application stages are part of the system.

When gypsum plaster may fit

Gypsum plaster is often considered for interior dry rooms where a smooth base is useful before further finishing. It is not automatically suitable for a wet area: check the product’s approved use, the substrate and how the wall will be protected from repeated moisture.

When cement-based plaster may fit

Cement-based plaster can suit mineral substrates and systems where moisture tolerance or a tile-ready base is part of the specification. It still needs the right preparation, thickness and drying conditions; the word cement alone does not guarantee compatibility.

Do not compare one property in isolation

Lower coverage, a smoother finish or a shorter apparent drying time does not make a mix universally better. The substrate, primer, plaster and finish must work as one compatible system. A product that performs well in one room can be the wrong choice in another.

Plan the amount after choosing the mix

Measure the area and average coat thickness, then use the coverage printed on the selected bag in the plaster calculator. Do not replace product data with an averaged consumption figure: substrate and mix properties change the actual requirement.
