Base Filler vs Finishing Filler: What Is the Difference?

Base filler and finishing filler have different jobs. A base or filling compound helps correct modest irregularities after plastering or local repairs, while a finishing filler creates a finer, more uniform surface before paint or thin wallpaper. Neither should be chosen without checking the substrate and the product’s coat limits.

What base filler is for

Base filler is used to close small hollows, transitions and surface defects within the thickness allowed by the product. It does not replace plaster when the wall needs a deep build-up, and it still requires a firm, clean and suitably prepared surface.

What finishing filler changes

Finishing filler is intended for a thinner coat and a smoother texture that can be sanded before the final finish. It can refine a prepared wall, but it will reveal or repeat movement, cracks and loose material that remain below it.

A practical sequence

• Clean and, where required, prime a sound substrate.
• Use a base filler to correct deviations within its permitted range.
• After the layer is ready, apply finishing filler if the finish requires a finer surface.
• Sand, remove dust and prime before paint or wallpaper when the system calls for it.

When one product may be enough

A manufacturer may allow one compound for the whole task when the base is already even and the required thickness fits the product. Drywall, old coatings, wet rooms and thin decorative finishes can have separate limitations.
